Co-educational excellence for all, in a caring, friendly and tolerant community

A very warm welcome to the Alleyn's website.

We were delighted to receive a glowing school inspection report in 2008 which commented that:

academic excellence, good learning, excellent pastoral care and a wide-ranging educational experience are obvious features of the school, in line with its vision
                                                                                             (ISI Report 2008: Section 4.6)

Amongst their conclusions the inspectors reported that:

Alleyn's School fully meets its aim of providing a broad liberal education for boys and girls of high academic ability in a caring, friendly and tolerant community. Relationships between teachers and pupils at every level of the school are entirely natural and underpinned by an assumption of respect. The result is a community at ease with itself, where pupils are willing and co-operative learners who achieve high standards in work and activities without being pressurised, and who are happy, courteous and confident without being arrogant.
                                                                                             (ISI Report 2008: Section 5.1)

This website aims to give you an insight into this high-achieving and friendly community. It gives an overview of our activities and achievements and seeks to portray our unique ethos and friendly, inclusive atmosphere. In addition, you will find clear links to our Junior School (boys and girls aged 4–11), Senior School (boys and girls aged 11–18), the Alleyn's Association (our parents' association), the Edward Alleyn Club (former pupils or alumni association) and lots of other useful information, including admissions (policy & procedures), academic departments, exam results, the 2008 inspection report in full, the school development plan and scholarships and bursaries.

Alleyn's is a leading co-educational day school, committed to achieving high academic success within a culture of outstanding pastoral care (a vertical House system was established in 1907 to complement the horizontal Form and Year system), which promotes and values the widest possible range of co-curricular activities (under the leadership of an Assistant Head [Co-Curricular]). We have been co-educational since 1976, believing firmly in the principle of co-education as the best framework for boys and girls to achieve their full potential and to develop life-long skills in preparation for university, the world of work and life in general.

We are extremely fortunate to have extensive and modern facilities, including the new Edward Alleyn Building which houses a large new performing arts centre, and all within a 26-acre site with extensive games fields and running track, near to all major transport routes.

We are dedicated to achieving educational excellence through inclusion. A comprehensive range of bursaries, exhibitions and scholarships supports our open-access policy at 11+, when we aim to offer places to those pupils most able to benefit from an Alleyn's education, irrespective of financial means.

We are justly proud of our pupils who leave us with a strong sense of mutual respect, social responsibility, concern for the needs of others and confident in their own ability to make a difference. Do come along to meet them; you will find them friendly, tolerant and encouraged to be independent thinkers.

I hope that you enjoy looking through our website but there is no real substitute for seeing and experiencing the 'real thing'. Therefore, I hope that you will visit us on one of our Open Days, or at any time convenient to you, to see for yourself that Alleyn's is a truly welcoming and high-achieving school.

I look forward to meeting you: you will be most welcome.
