Frank Halford (Roper's 1942-1949) returned to Alleyn’s School to share his experiences of life at school during World War Two. The children were fascinated to learn of his evacuation, first to Deal in Kent and three years later to Rossall School in Lancashire. He told them of his near drowning experience in the sea water school pool, finding cockroaches in his custard and receiving “ six of the best”. He explained that he returned to London every holiday, except for the summer of 1944 when the Doodlebugs made a trip home too dangerous.
