Alleyn’s hosted the regional heat of the Maths Quiz Club competition, an event that AJS participates in each year. Alleyn’s entered two teams of 4 and these children were competing against 12 teams from other schools. The teams were working against the clock and each player used their own personal wireless handset to answer questions. Discussion and conferring amongst team members was encouraged which allowed the children to work together and think strategically throughout. The quiz comprised 30 multiple choice maths questions covering topics such as mental arithmetic, measurement, time and money, geometry, algebra, logic, number patterns, fractions, decimals, percentages and statistics.
Scores and positions were displayed after each of the 5 rounds which increased the excitement of the competition. Both Alleyn’s teams performed very well. Alleyn’s Team 1 were in 6th place after the first round but climbed steadily throughout the competition to finish in an excellent 3rd place. Alleyn’s Team 2 were extremely strong throughout and they finished the event in a clear 1st place. Many congratulations to both teams and Alleyn’s Team 2 will progress to the final. Fingers crossed that Alleyn’s Team 1 will be invited to the final too as one of the best-performing runners up.
