The Southwark Cathedral Orchestral and Choral Concert takes place on Wednesday, 29 April and we are delighted to open up places in both our orchestra and choir to musical alumni who are actively engaged in music-making, whether performing professionally, playing in amateur orchestras, or singing in choral societies.
This year's programme celebrates the 50th anniversary of Alleyn's becoming a co-educational school, and we can think of no more fitting tribute than the fourth movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The finale, with its stirring Ode to Joy, stands as one of music's greatest testaments to the power of unity and shared humanity; a work that brings together voices and instruments in a vision of harmony that transcends division. Just as this anniversary marks 50 years of our community learning, creating and thriving together at Alleyn's, so Beethoven's masterpiece reminds us that our greatest achievements come when diverse voices unite in common purpose.
To mark this milestone, we are opening places in both our orchestra and choir to alumni, creating a musical collaboration across generations. The programme will also feature an additional orchestral work and a choral piece, both of which will welcome alumni participation.
There will be rehearsals on Sunday, 26 April at Alleyn’s and on the day of the concert in Southwark Cathedral in the afternoon.
