Alleyn's 400

2019 was an extraordinary year for Alleyn's marking the 400th anniversary of Edward Alleyn's College of God's Gift, founded in Dulwich by the celebrated actor, entrepreneur and benefactor.

In the four centuries since 1619, Edward Alleyn's original vision for exceptional education developed into several schools across London, as well as the original Chapel and Almshouses in Dulwich. At Alleyn's, we wanted to celebrate that astonishing story, and to build an enduring legacy which echoes our Founder's own.

We were delighted that our School and wider community joined with us throughout 2019, starting with our Service of Commemoration at Westminster Abbey, as we commemorated 400 years of history, welcomed the community for the free All@Alleyn's programme of performances, workshops and lectures, and launched our 400th Anniversary Campaign: Growing Bursaries for the Future.

This ambitious fundraising campaign sought to dramatically extend our bursary provision for girls and boys; widening access to Alleyn’s School for those who would not otherwise be able to attend. Supported by a line-up of dedicated Ambassadors drawn from the wider Alleyn's community, the Campaign raised funds to increase means-tested bursary provision in the years to come (currently, around 10% of pupils in the Senior School receive means-tested help with fees).

Below you can read stories, thoughts and photos from throughout the year. You can also purchase a range of anniversary merchandise, including a commemorative publication, reusable water bottle and KeepCups, here.
