Volunteering involves students across the Middle and Upper Schools and consists of diverse community-based schemes.
All volunteers participate in at least two of these schemes during the course of the year.
Junior Saints connects Alleyn’s students with pupils at Belham, a mainstream primary school in Peckham. Our students act as mentors in the areas of Numeracy, Literacy, Art & Craft as well as simply playing/interacting with the children. As part of this activity the group visit the school on Field Day where they spend the day as classroom assistants.
Senior Saints (The Elms) where our students are involved with befriending the residents of The Elms Centre, a nearby care home for the elderly with memory issues. This group’s Field Day visit is to spend the morning at the Centre doing that most difficult of things – listening!
The knowledge & skills that all Volunteers learn on a weekly basis is put into action by acting as Learning & ‘Listening’ Assistants on each of our three Field Days.
Each scheme places different physical and emotional demands on our Volunteering students, who respond with exceptional maturity. Our students develop a keen sense of loyalty and commitment and, more importantly, a strong sense of community that cannot be taught or measured within the confines of a school setting. Each student’s progress is followed closely by the supervising teacher.
Our pupils develop a keen sense of loyalty and commitment and, more importantly, a strong sense of community that cannot be taught or measured within the confines of a school setting.
