All Year 12 and Year 13 French students took part in an immersive study day at the French Institute on Thursday 24th November.
In the morning, students enjoyed discussing and completing various tasks on the topic of the banlieues and multiculturalism in France. They also studied the context and main themes of the film ‘Suprêmes’ by Audrey Estraugou. During their lunchbreak, students had some time to explore the nearby French area and were encouraged to buy lunch in one of the French cafés.
In the afternoon, the pupils enjoyed this powerful and renowned French film in the atmospheric Ciné Lumière. The film depicts the challenging living conditions in the French suburbs, the frequent protests and police brutality which influenced the rap music of Joey Star and Kool Shen from the duo ‘Suprême NTM.’ For his performance, Sandor Funtek, who played Kool Shen was nominated for a Cesar for most promising actor. After the film, students enjoyed a talk about the French Institute and a guided tour of the excellent library that they can benefit from throughout their studies at no cost. Here is one student’s description of the day:
“I thought the movie was amazing and it taught me some more vocab for informal conversations. I also ate lots of delicious French pastries from one of the French cafés which was a bonus.”
