The Combined Cadet Force is one of the largest voluntary co-educational CCFs in the country.
Alleyn's CCF is run by School staff members with additional support from Regular and Reserve Officers and NCOs from all 3 services. It has a proud history of nurturing outstanding cadets who harness their military skillset going forward, whether they choose a civilian or military career.
Pupils can opt to join at the beginning of Year 9 and many continue to Year 13, by which time they will be leading and instructing the younger members of the Contingent.
Learning Valuable Life Skills
There are three separate services within the CCF; the Army, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. Each service offers different ‘specific to arm’ training, however all cadets follow a core tri-service curriculum. This ensures cadets gain experience of living and working in environments outside of their comfort zone, enabling them to grow as individuals and learn valuable life skills. The CCF parades weekly with all cadets taking part in a variety of activities that have been planned for them by their section staff and cadet NCOs.
The CCF at Alleyn's has a number of aims. It works to instil self-confidence in its members, principally through giving them the experience of various exciting and/or adventurous activities such as:
- Flying both powered aircraft and gliders
- Sailing and powerboating
- Scuba diving
- Canoeing / kayaking
- Rock climbing / abseiling
- Arctic expeditions
- Mountain climbing
Camps and Competitions
In addition, cadets will learn to work together as a team, to become leaders and instructors. The NCOs are carefully trained for this task during Year 11 on the JNCO Cadre and the best are selected to be senior Non-Commissioned Officers.
Many of the cadets attend week-long camps during the Easter and summer holidays at MOD-owned bases. These camps are very popular and are open to all cadets. As well as the camps, cadets have the opportunity to attend termly Field Days, range and obstacle course days, nationally recognised qualification courses, competitions and various other events and trips throughout the year.
"CCF is my favourite thing about Alleyn’s - and the most challenging, exciting, enjoyable and intimidating thing I have ever been able to take part in. I have loved every second of it."

"I found my passion in Alleyn’s CCF, nurtured by my inspirational NCOs whose enthusiasm was infectious. The CADRE course taught me independence and determination and developed my leadership and teamwork abilities."
