A huge thank you to Reno Antoniades (Tulley's 1984) and Richard Lloyd (Spurgeon’s 1982) for sharing Oscar and BAFTA winning The Zone of Interest with an audience of alumni, pupils, and parents on Wednesday, 24 April.

Reno Antoniades, who is the current Edward Alleyn Club President, is Executive Producer of the film while Richard Lloyd supervised the film’s post-production.

Following a screening of the film, Reno and Richard shared their inside knowledge of creating the powerful film, which won three BAFTAs in February and two Oscars in March, including the award for best International Film Feature and best Sound, in a Q&A session with the audience.

The two alumni shared their roles in supporting the incredible direction of Jonathan Glazer to create the harrowing film which depicts the mundane lives of a Nazi family in their home behind the walls of the Auschwitz death camp.

They discussed helping realise Jonathan’s vision of shining a light on this chilling period of history and unforgettable treatise on complicity, with sensitivity and respect. And they spoke of the ways the film and team behind it worked to underline continuities between past and present and the human capacity to live with monstrous atrocities.

Reno and Richard shared the aim of keeping both dialogue and sound, including music, to an absolute minimum for maximum impact. And they shared some of the challenges of producing the film – from Covid-induced delays to Richard’s role in post-production taking vast amounts of footage and creating a film that can be watched, as well as recutting the film after its initial release at the Cannes Film Festival.

Thank you, Reno and Richard, for sharing your roles in such an incredibly important, powerful, and relevant film, with the Alleyn’s community.
