On 17 June, alumni and guests gathered beneath the atmospheric arches of Holborn Viaduct for a truly special evening at the Winemakers Club. In this unique and intimate setting, guests enjoyed a guided wine tasting led by EAC President and drinks columnist for The Times, Nina Caplan (Spurgeon’s 1991), whose expertise and engaging storytelling made for a fascinating and memorable event.
Guests were treated to a carefully curated selection of wines, each chosen to explore Nina’s theme, A Sense of Place. Across five distinct wines, Nina struck the perfect balance between insight and entertainment, expertly guiding attendees through each glass and bringing the wines to life with vivid stories of the regions they came from, alongside her own experiences as an award-winning wine and travel writer.
The selection prompted lively discussion and challenged common assumptions. Guests sampled a Canadian sparkling wine made in the same way as champagne - one that Nina had even chosen to serve at her own wedding, while a darker rosé invited everyone to reconsider the idea that paler always means better. Nina also shared a practical tip that surprised many: red wine is often best enjoyed slightly cooler than people are used to.
A huge thank you to Nina for guiding the evening so expertly, and for sharing her time and knowledge with warmth and enthusiasm. We are also grateful to all the alumni, partners, and guests who joined us and made the evening such a brilliant occasion.
With excellent wines, a distinctive venue, and the chance to catch up and reconnect, the event was a wonderful celebration of our alumni community.
