Thank you to Theo McCausland (Brading’s 2012, Panthers) for inspiring Alleyn’s youngest pupils at their termly Alumni Assembly on how his love of Science and Technology at school has led him to a career as a Systems Engineer at Motion Picture Solutions, working on high profile movies and live events including Paddington in Peru and Moana 2.
Theo captured pupils’ attention with his exciting career journey from studying neuroscience at Cambridge University to teaching in Azerbaijan and later working in app development and data analysis for hospitals and museums before he entered the world of cinema. He spoke about his work coding and working in films so that they can be translated, subtitled and delivered to cinemas around the world. The pupils enjoyed seeing old film clips of Theo’s Year 6 play and a home movie with his friends was a reminder that the spirit of Alleyn's has not changed.
Explaining that while at school he was always at a lunchtime or afterschool club, he encouraged pupils to embrace all that’s on offer to them and follow their passions, talk to everyone and learn about the world! And he offered pupils tips, including: “It is not always easy! Stuff sometimes goes wrong” and “I only learned how to code at 25 years old. You’ve got a head start!”
He talked fondly of his time at Alleyn’s and his old school teachers and friends, including Harry Houseago (Brown’s 2014) who now teaches guitar to many of the Junior School pupils!
Following his presentation, Theo had the opportunity to take a tour of Alleyn’s, including the observatory and he even bumped into Jordan Lewis, who he went to primary school with, and is now, coincidentally, Head of Theo’s old House, Brading’s!
Thank you, Theo for returning to Alleyn’s and inspiring Junior School pupils to be all they can be.
