On Thursday, 22 January, A level linguists travelled to St Dunstan’s College for an inspiring event celebrating the raft of careers open to language students.

Representatives from The University of Cambridge, Queen Mary University of London, and Bath and Durham Universities showcased degree pathways, alongside organisations including the French Higher Education section of the French Embassy, GCHG and Médecins Sans Frontières. Interactive taster sessions allowed students to try a new language ab initio or explore linguistics, reinforcing the intellectual breadth of the subject.

A highlight of the evening was an undergraduate panel discussion which featured Alleyn’s alumnus Alex Johnston (Brown’s 2024) who is currently reading Arabic and French at The University of Oxford. Alex and the panel members gave students practical insight into the university application process, what studying languages at degree level involves, and the life-changing opportunities offered by ERASMUS, with plenty of time for questions. A creative panel brought languages to life through careers in journalism, fashion, acting and teaching, while talks on roles in the Foreign Office and the United Nations followed.

Students left with a renewed sense that languages are not only academically enriching but professionally vital. Employers are crying out for linguists whose intercultural awareness and interpersonal skills foster strong relationships in a truly global jobs market.

It was an inspiring event for our linguists and especially impactful to hear from an Alleyn's alumnus. Thank you, Alex!
