We were delighted to welcome back professional footballer Laurie Goddard (Spurgeon’s 2021), who returned to Alleyn’s to inspire pupils with a real-world insight into sporting pathways beyond school.
Recently signing a professional contract with Connecticut United FC, Laurie spoke to pupils in Years 7–13 about his journey from Alleyn’s 1st XI football to US college soccer and the professional game. Drawing on his experiences at Merrimack College and Hofstra University, he explained how academic results, applications and scholarships can open doors - and why keeping options open is key.
Laurie shared how amazing he has found the sporting culture in the United States, and how much he enjoyed the sport facilities and opportunities to play while studying. He gave practical advice on choosing the right college, managing the demands of daily training alongside study, and how it is ok to make changes - for example, the option to transfer universities during a degree to gain new opportunities. His honest reflections helped pupils understand both the rewards and challenges of studying and competing at a high level in the US.
Pupils were fully engaged, asking thoughtful questions about scholarships, exams, match preparation and balancing sport with academics. Laurie also highlighted opportunities for girls in US soccer, referencing his sister Martha Goddard’s (Spurgeon’s 2024) scholarship experience at Valparaiso University in Northern Indiana.
Following his talk, Laurie visited Alleyn’s Junior School to give a session for Year 6 pupils, showing how alumni stories can inspire ambition at every stage.
Thank you, Laurie, for giving pupils such valuable insight and motivation.
