Congratulations to alumnus Max Fisher-Ayres (Tulley’s 2025), currently a first-year undergraduate of German and Linguistics at Oxford, who has joined the Test Development Committee for the Advanced question paper for the UK Linguistics Olympiad (UKLO), a national organisation made up mainly of academics from university linguistics departments and school teachers.
This is a quite extraordinary achievement for someone so soon after leaving school. The UKLO committee organises the annual Linguistics Olympiad in which teams from countries around the world compete in language-analysis competitions and linguistics puzzles to encourage a lifelong interest in the world’s languages.
For this year’s Advanced Paper, Max even illustrated the first question on the Seri language - an endangered indigenous language of Mexico, not known to be related to any other language.
Max has already enjoyed international success representing the UK in the International Linguistics Olympiad in both Brazil in 2024 and Taiwan in 2025.
Everyone at Alleyn’s, including the proud MFL Department, is delighted to see him enjoy such remarkable success.
