Development and Alumni Beyond Alleyn's

We were delighted to welcome back alumna Katya Ochagavia (Tyson’s 2004) on 7 October for an inspiring PSHE session with Year 10 and Year 12 students as part of Black History Month.

As Executive Producer - Documentaries at The Guardian, Katya returned to Alleyn’s to share her film Black Panther Cubs: When the Revolution Doesn’t Come, a deeply moving exploration of legacy, activism and identity. The documentary, which she produced, is about the children of the Black Panther party and their lives, born into the 1970s revolutionary movement for Black equality and self-determination, and the wrestle they still endure 50 years on because radical change never materialised. It offers a historically rich narrative and a personal reflection on lived experience, culminating in a poignant message about perseverance, self-care and community.

During the session Katya discussed how the film was made, giving students valuable insights into the creative process behind documentary storytelling. The screening prompted thoughtful discussion and reflection, as students explored themes of activism, family, and what it means to carry forward the struggles and achievements of previous generations.

As Katya explained, the film’s conclusion holds an important reminder: while the struggle for justice and progress may demand “mind, body and soul for the benefit of the people,” it is also vital to remember that you too are the people — and preserving your own wellbeing is essential to achieving lasting change.

The screening and talk were historically informative and emotionally powerful, and gave students a rare opportunity to hear directly from an Alleyn’s alumna who is helping shape conversations about history, activism and storytelling today.

Following the session, Katya also took time to have lunch with Film Studies students keen to find out more about her career journey and passions.

We are so grateful to Katya for supporting current pupils and to all of our alumni who return to inspire the next generation to learn, reflect and lead with purpose.

Thank you, Katya!
