Our Year 13 A Level Film Studies students had an unforgettable experience attending the screening of Kim Novak’s Vertigo at the BFI London Film Festival! This bold, visually striking documentary essay by director Alexandre O. Philippe dives deep into Vertigo (1958), exploring the film through the eyes, legacy, and mystique of its star, Kim Novak, while offering fresh psychological and cinematic perspectives on Hitchcock’s masterpiece.

The experience continued after the screening—students were treated to a fascinating Q&A with Philippe himself, gaining rare insight into his creative process and the challenges of interviewing a true film icon. This provided an invaluable extension of their studies in Hitchcock’s authorship, spectator theory, and the Hollywood film industry during the 1950s.

Experiencing a first UK screening at a major international festival created genuine excitement, and students loved being part of a live festival audience. And yes—they definitely enjoyed the snacks too! Huge thanks to Mr Howell-Harte for organising such an inspiring trip, which not only deepened their passion for cinema but also offered another exceptional enrichment opportunity beyond the classroom.
