After two dazzling nights, our Upper School production of Anything Goes has already brought the house down, with around 100 students involved both on stage and behind the scenes, and an audience of over 1,200 people treated to a truly spectacular show. Two more performances are yet to come, promising even more sparkle, laughs, and unforgettable moments.
From the very first number, the energy was electric. The brilliant work of our musicians in the band, and of course the singers, soloists, and company, shone through in every scene. Director of Drama Jeremy Piper enthused, 'musical theatre at its most fun and most crowd-pleasingly silly', the production delights with its comic timing, delightful characters, and amazing music, unapologetically presenting a comic and uncritical view of the production.
Huge thanks go to the incredibly talented staff, actors, musicians, designers, and technicians whose generosity, creativity, and humor have brought the show to life. The production features a wide range of musical numbers, each one more challenging than the last. Director of Music Luis Pares praised the company, saying, 'The music throughout the play requires extraordinary commitment from everyone involved, and this company has truly risen to the challenge. Our soloists have inhabited these songs with such character and heart.'
The music is truly a highlight: charming, hilarious, and full of sheer joy. The band performs with exceptional skill, navigating complex rhythms, unexpected key changes, and technical demands that require both dedication and enthusiasm. The music is not just accompaniment but an integral part of the performance and overall audience experience.
Director of Dance Natalie Demain has brought her creative vision to the stage, ensuring the dance numbers are inspiring, fun, and full of energy. As she reflected, 'The world of Anything Goes is full of sparkle, style, and comedy: capturing that through dance has been a wonderful challenge.' Across the first two nights, the confidence, team spirit, and imagination of the cast has shone through, leaving audiences captivated.
Having rehearsed for the past three months, the cast and crew have formed a strong bond, and the transformation from first rehearsal to opening night has been simply wonderful. With exceptional performances, stunning choreography, and music performed with character and heart, Anything Goes is already proving to be a triumph of energy, creativity, and sheer theatrical joy - two shows down, two more to go!
