Huge congratulations to Alleyn's star mathematical alumna, Aanya Goyal (Brading’s 2025), who was awarded Bronze at the prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) this summer.
The World Championships of Maths brought together the best pre-university mathematicians from more than 100 countries around the world to tackle incredibly difficult algebra and pre-calculus problems as well as areas of maths not conventionally covered in secondary school and often not at university level either.
To be part of the UK team, Aanya was identified through a rigorous training process of exams and training camps organised by the UK Maths Trust (UKMT). Her extraordinary display of academic ability places Aanya at 229th in the world for maths!
Celebrating Aanya’s success, along with her UK Teammates who were collectively awarded three Gold, a Silver, and two Bronze medals at the competition, and finished 16th out of 110 participating countries, Aanya was invited to a special celebration at 10 Downing Street followed by the UKMT International Mathematics Olympiad celebration lecture, held at research-driven trading firm, Jane Street Europe, where Aanya received her award.
While at Jane Street, Aanya met a group of six current Alleyn’s mathematicians who attended the celebration lecture. They saw Aanya receive her award and enjoyed the chance to chat to her about the rigorous competition. They were then treated to a lecture from Head of Maths at Bristol University, Professor Oliver Johnson, on the theory and applications of Group Testing for diseases, its use during the COVID pandemic, and an insight into some of the cutting-edge mathematical research he currently does.
Aanya has always been passionate about Maths and has achieved many brilliant successes over the last few years, including being the youngest girl ever asked to join the team and represent the UK in the European Girls’ Mathematics Olympiad at the age of just 13. And in Year 10 she was awarded A* grades in her Maths and Further Maths A levels.
Congratulations Aanya on this exceptional achievement. We are incredibly proud of you and we wish you every success as you go on to study Maths at Trinity College Cambridge this coming October. We look forward to seeing where your love of Maths takes you next!
