On Monday, 22 Further Mathematics students attended Maths Fest 2026 at the Royal Institution, an all-day celebration of mathematics hosted by Matt Parker, maths YouTuber and stand-up mathematician, designed to inspire sixth form students.
Some of the country’s leading mathematics speakers shared their favourite aspects of the subject through a diverse and engaging programme of talks. Students explored topics including Sophie Germain primes (Sophie Maclean), mathematics in the world of knitting (Laura Taalman), the secrets of a digital world (James Grime), exam strategies (Nicole Cozens), the key to the Tower of Hanoi (Ayliean MacDonald), and the sacred geometry of chance (Ben Sparks).
A standout moment of the day came when Maja K-T (Y12) took to the stage as one of four finalists in the Maths Slam, delivering an outstanding three-minute presentation on the mathematics behind Rapunzel’s hair to an audience of students and teachers - an incredible achievement.
Overall, it was an inspiring, exciting, and thoroughly enjoyable mathematical day out for all involved.
