As part of Alleyn's programme for Neurodiversity Celebration Week (18-24 March), the SEND Society and MSU (Minority Student Union) co-hosted a fascinating discussion.

The event, part of Alleyn's ongoing commitment to fostering inclusivity and understanding, was attended by staff and pupils, and delved into the intricate topics of masking within the neurodiverse community and the concept of code-switching in broader society. Participants from across the School engaged in thought-provoking and sensitive exploration of these themes, leading to a wealth of great questions and considered responses.

Leading the discussion was Flick in Year 13, who shared a presentation with the group and then guided the conversation as participants looked at and fed back on a range of different perspectives. Flick brought a great deal of expertise to the group, having also delivered a brilliant TEDxAlleyns talk in October 2023, exploring the interaction of autism and neurotypical thinking.

This insightful session was just one component of Alleyn's Neurodiversity Week activities, through which the SEND Society aims to challenge misconceptions surrounding neurodiversity. SENDSoc kick-started the week with a compelling assembly. Other events planned for the week include a round-table discussion on personal experiences of neurodiversity, a workshop exploring representations of neurodiversity in film and media, and a fun table games get-together to complete the week.

Through these activities, SENDSoc hopes to encourage active listening and raise awareness throughout the School community. They are also proudly displaying images of well-known individuals and celebrities who identify as neurodiverse, reinforcing the message of inclusivity.

To further mark the week, Alleyn's is flying the Disability Pride flag, a symbol which aims to represent multiple experiences and diversity in the disability community.

As Neurodiversity Week continues to unfold at Alleyn's, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing and fundamental importance of understanding, awareness and celebration of all individuals - as the School's manifesto reminds us: there is an all in Alleyn's.
