This week, two teams from Alleyn’s School, Aerosat and Lancelot, made it to the 2025 UK National CanSat Finals in York, after earning their places from an initial 260 teams. Held at the National STEM Learning Centre, the event was a thrilling three-day competition where both teams displayed exceptional teamwork and resilience.
Aerosat: A Journey of Determination and Precision
Team Aerosat consisted of Lavitta (Project Manager), Louisa (Budget Manager and Researcher), Claire (Outreach and Data Analysis), Janice (Parachute Manager), and Abril (Head of Electrical and Software Design). Despite facing technical issues, such as radio interference and a broken microprocessor part, the team stayed calm and worked tirelessly till the very last minute to fix the issues. Their perseverance paid off, and they successfully collected data during the launch.
Their preparation was flawless, with no cracks or damage to their can during testing or launch. Their well-planned and impactful presentation earned them the title of Most Professional Team for their exceptional teamwork and problem-solving skills.
Lancelot: Creativity and Team Spirit
Team Lancelot stood out with their DIY t-shirts and team spirit. The team consisted of Richard (Project Manager), Patrick (Lead of Testing and Experiments), Erik (Parafoil Lead and Primary Mission Coder), Milo (Ground Control Support and Head of Outreach), Louis (Ground Control Developer and Secondary Parafoil Lead), and Thomas, Yaggi, and (Communications Lead and Coder). On launch day, they encountered a significant issue when their parachute tangled, preventing it from deploying properly and becoming unsteerable on landing. However, the team quickly adjusted their design and ran several tests before being given a second chance to launch. This time, the parachute deployed successfully, with cheers from all the other teams ringing out in support. Their electronics survived the rough landing, thanks to their backup systems.
Lancelot’s enthusiasm and teamwork were evident as they supported each other and shared resources with Aerosat, demonstrating great camaraderie between the teams.
Both teams delivered outstanding presentations, showcasing their knowledge, creativity, and teamwork. Moving forward, they plan to refine their projects, with ideas like adding a camera to improve control and steering. We are incredibly proud of Aerosat and Lancelot for representing Alleyn’s with such determination, skill, and sportsmanship at the National CanSat Finals. Their hard work and resilience truly set them apart as exceptional competitors!
