As part of our ongoing commitment to the community, our school works closely with several care homes and food banks. We are also developing a new link with Flexi Care, which provides children and adult social services across Southwark. This partnership aims to increase our presence and support in the community, while giving students the opportunity to build meaningful connections with people outside the classroom.
This week, 30 enthusiastic students from Years 7 and 8 volunteered to bring some festive cheer to local care homes by carol singing. On Thursday and Friday lunchtimes, the group visited two care homes, spreading joy through song. Under the guidance of Miss Roberts, the students had rehearsed on Monday, preparing a repertoire of beloved carols including Silent Night, Jingle Bells, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman. Leo, a Year 8 student, accompanied the group on the keyboard, ensuring every performance was perfectly timed.
The first visit was to Limetree House, an assisted living and care home in Peckham. The students introduced themselves before performing five carols, and the response was heartwarming. Residents clapped, danced, and even sang along, creating a joyful atmosphere. The quality of the singing was excellent, with Leo conducting the group flawlessly on the keyboard.
What stood out most, however, was the visible happiness on the residents’ faces. The students were so moved by the experience that, as they were leaving, many asked if they could spend more time talking with the residents. Their enthusiasm and compassion demonstrated remarkable values at such a young age.
These visits not only brought festive cheer to the community but also allowed our students to experience the joy of giving and connecting with others - a true reminder of the spirit of the season.
