We were delighted to welcome Eduard Florin Niga, our annual Biology speaker and author of Ants: Workers of the World, to the AllStudios building this week.
A professional macrophotographer, Eduard treated us to a series of extraordinary images that brought the hidden world of ants into breathtaking focus. His work captured the powerful intersection between Biology and Art, revealing a natural world that is at once intricate, beautiful and uncompromising.
From female-led societies governed by strict hierarchies to wars, raids, slavery, engineering feats and astonishing morphological extremes, students gained a vivid insight into the complexity of ant life. Stories of bullet ants in his loft and the use of ant heads as biodegradable sutures by South American tribes ensured there was no shortage of fascination.
Most striking of all were his portraits of ant faces, a reminder that what we so often overlook as insignificant holds remarkable detail and diversity when viewed up close. It was an inspiring session that has left the department buzzing and even contemplating the educational merits of an ant farm.
