Last year, almost 50 Alleyn’s Year 12 Economists took part in the Young Economists Conference 2025, held at Dulwich College, where we were joined by around 350 students from nine other SSLP schools. The day began with insightful talks from a range of expert speakers. We heard from Eric Lonergan, a macro hedge fund manager and author, who spoke about the importance of elections and democracy in society. Hope Perfect, a civil servant working on international trade deals such as CPTPP, discussed the consequences of international trade. Osama Rahman shared his experiences working at the heart of government as a chief economist and data science leader, while John-Baptiste Wautier offered a perspective from the investment world, drawing on his background in private equity and academia.

After the talks, we were split into mixed-school groups and given the challenge of protecting and sustainably growing a £5 million fund over 10 years. We had to identify key macro forces such as climate action and AI, then select a risk-balanced portfolio of assets that would deliver the objectives, before presenting it to the judges.

It was a great day of learning, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving that gave us a glimpse into how finance can shape the future.
